One Room Challenge: WEEK 3 - Wall Décor
ONE ROOM CHALLENGE: WEEK 1 | WEEK 2 | WEEK 3 (YOU ARE HERE) | WEEK 4 | WEEK 5 | WEEK 6 | WEEK 7 | WEEK 8
This week was all about elevating our space to new heights with the perfect artwork and an intricate oblong mirror. As someone who loves art both from this life, AND my past one (my inner wine connoisseur just couldn't stay in her shell any longer!), I can appreciate how influential it is for our lives—scientists have even found evidence of its existence dating back 73,000 years! Art has the ability to start conversations deep within us, and lift spirits through vibrant colors or bold statements - not to mention tying together different aspects of a room into stunning harmony.
If you haven’t taken art seriously in your home before, it's not too late to start! With just four simple steps, I'll show you how easy it is to create an art collection that reflects who you are, one piece at a time — and trust me, they are simple and satisfying!
Step 1: We Gotta Budget For It
Decorating your walls doesn't have to cost you a fortune. The cost-effective solution for wall art these days lies in pintables and those talented local artists. There are so many beautiful and unique wall decor designs online ranging from vintage landscape photos to modern abstract canvases. Choose the theme or style that will best compliment your space, but don't be afraid to mix-and-match materials. Feel free to peruse craft and thrift stores, even Etsy from time to time, for amazing finds that won't break the bank - or alternatively commission a piece from a local artist for something completely unique to your area like I did. She curated some magnificent pieces of art for my design project in her art studio that exceeded my expectations but not my budget. There's no one right way to make sure you stick to your budget when it comes to wall art – it's all about deciding what works for you.
Step 2: Follow Your Heart
My vision for this One Room Challenge was solely born out of the beauty that I found in this 1 piece of art. I came across it at one of my favorite places to shop for art, AtHome, and it tugged at my heartstrings, brought me instant joy, and has whole-heartedly inspired me to create this concept board “Our Journey to Zen”. The feelings we attach to our artwork and décor say a lot about our taste, identity, and even feelings. Whether it's a piece you created from scratch or a painting from your favorite artist, there's something special about wall art that speaks to us in a profound way. Following your heart when it comes to selecting what goes on your walls is important; the subtle ways it can affect our feelings and emotions should never be overlooked. Make sure that whatever you choose to hang in your home is reflective of you and gives you a sense of joy and comfort—after all, it's up there for everyone else to see.
Step 3: Get Adventurous
If you're feeling a little artistic - and maybe a bit adventurous - why not let your imagination run wild and try out some unique wall art pieces? Creative gallery walls look so amazing when they include things like sculptures, woven baskets, and fun metal decor. Rather than taking the traditional route of having only paintings as art in the home, mix it up to make your home feel interesting and collected. As you can see in our project “Our Journey to Zen”, the wall was really brought to life with positive words of affirmation. They help us stay grounded, shift our perspective, and communicate love, appreciation, and respect - so get creative and don't be afraid to think outside the box.
Step 4: Use Art in Unexpected Ways
Spice up your living space with art! From leaning art against the wall to creating a gallery wall or art installation, get creative with how you style art. Even in small places like kitchen counters and bookshelves, art can add some zest and make a big difference in your home's décor. Plus, art makes fun conversation starters and even serves as an ice-breaker when friends come over. So break out of the mold, unleash your creativity, and transform that blank wall into something amazing.
